Partnerships & Awards

Head of State Awards

Five of our Students started working for their Bronze Awards. The Awards are given by the Head of State Award Scheme Ghana, which is affiliated with the international Duke of Edinburgh Award. The students each learn a new skill, participate weekly in physical exercise, and do ‘Community service’ in the school by helping in catering and maintenance.

This is a partnership for inclusiveness and our students are among the first few young people with special needs in Ghana who participate. The Scheme supported The Epicentre with items needed for the activity."

Partnerships & collaborations

The School has partnered with MatildaFlow. An NGO that creates jobs opportunities for persons with disability, mothers/carers of children with disabilities and the vulnerable. They also advocate for persons with disabilities.

The Epicentre is committed to enhancing community awareness about disability and promoting inclusion locally. In addition to providing education and therapies to children with developmental disabilities, we operate various projects to encourage inclusive activities and shared spaces. Below are some of the key initiatives we are currently involved in:

 1. PLAY-LEARN

The Play-Learn project is an ongoing expansion project for The Epicentre facility in New Gbawe. It has included the construction of a play area and sports court, as well as the establishment of a community physical therapy unit. The purpose of the project is to increase community engagement with the center by providing services and opportunities to students without disabilities, encouraging inclusive play and shared spaces. Programs using these expanded facilities also assist the center in generating revenue to operate sustainably.

 2. Weekend Respite Camps

The Epicentre is planning weekend respite for children where they stay and engage in various activities such as cooking, baking, outdoor play, music and read sessions.

 3. Sensory Garden/ Playground Project

Special needs children flourish after feeling, hearing and smelling nature. It contributes to their development. A sensory garden increases their non-verbal communication, it teaches .  to participate in cooperative effort, it helps them form positive relationships with adults (2008 study). The centre plans to create a water feature as part of the sensory garden project. We have an incomplete astro turf as part of the outdoor play project.

We have a concreted court for play and we intend to convert this into a 'soft play' area with different textures.
